Boracay, the
Philippines' most coveted and multi-awarded island. A paradise that every
Filipinos are proud of. It is located about 2 kilometers of the northwest tip
of Panay Island, particularly in Malay, province of Aklan, in the Vizayas
region. The visitors of the island is constantly growing every year, as well as
constantly increasing revenues and income of the island and the beneficiaries.
From the investors, to the tourist guide all the way down to the jeepney
drivers and tricycle drivers.
Boracay Philippines Resorts, the gem island of
the country.
From the visitor's,
point of view, as well as the beneficiaries' point of view, they would only
think that Boracay is the best place, not only in hotel accommodation and beach
wise, but also the best place for money profiting wise. Seeing the island, only
in its bright side, pretending to be blind on the other face of the island, the
island’s dark side and its prerequisites.
Atis (Aita, Ita)
tribe, the island’s native, the island’s original inhabitants, mostly
uneducated, partly unemployed, are continuously fighting for the right to lived
in the island that they’ve been living in centuries. They have been pushed over
by the fast growing hotels and bars, buildings of infrastructures. The hopeless
battle of the island’s natives is somewhat nowhere to go. The government of Aklan
seemingly have a little interest on this issue, probably because they’ve also
been benefitting from the investors and hotel owners. And now, the campaign of
the Atis for their rights has gone a deeper and serious result, but in a
negative way, to the extent that someone has been killed. Yes, this has gone a
long and serious way. I have read a report that an Ati native and one of their
leader have been shot to death. After this alarming news, and a few years
later, the Atis finally won a government –issued certificate of ancestral land.
Though hotel owners, investors and property developers are still contesting the
decision, therefore, the battle still continues.
As a concern
citizen of this republic, I’m extending my sympathy to the Atis in the island
of Boracay. Though I know that it won’t help. The government of Aklan must
exert more effort to resolve this issue, they may consider relocation for the
Atis, but I think the natives won’t agree with that. Or they may consider tightening
the security on the ancestral land owned by the Aiti native, for them to live
peacefully and worry free.
Tourism plays a big part to the country, not only for its income, but also for the people who are beneficiary of it,and doing it for a living. Bad images like this can hurt tourism in many ways, especially for the country's gem,
Boracay Philippines Resorts. Conservation and protection of it is a must. For the whites, representing the visitors, investors, and property owners, and for the blacks, representing the island's natives.
